PGA GOLFERS

Friday, August 8, 2008

A recent rule change by the PGA has opened the doors for certain manufacturers to release “Interchangeable Shaft Technology” into the market in the coming year. The assertion is that this will “revolutionise” the game for amateurs.

The major selling point behind this interchangeable club system is that in just a matter of seconds one can swap out the shaft depending on the day’s conditions and the type of course. Shafts designed to produce lower ball flight, for example, would help on windy days, and shafts that offer higher ball flight (and thus more carry) would make sense on wet days.

Now this all sounds great in theory but how will it evolve in practice? Most of the new interchangeable systems give you one club head with three different shafts, all of which you’d buy. That seems like an awful lot of expense when one of them probably fits and the other two don’t over 80% of the time…

And that’s not all. Whist most of these new systems offer changeable shafts for your driver in varying flexes and weights they’re still provided in what manufacturers call the “standard” length of 45” – 46”. The average length of driver shaft on the PGA Tour for the last three seasons is 44.5”, so if the best swingers in the world know they can’t get enough accuracy out of a 46” driver what chance do we have?

Tom Wishon, the leading name in custom club making & design will tell you that the average golfer is “consistently inconsistent” and certain swing tendencies will occur some 80-90% of the time. The answer then, as always, lies in custom fitting. Go see your local PGA club pro when you next decide a new set of clubs is in order and in just a few minutes he’ll identify those variables which occur repeatedly in your swing and then fit your clubs to match, for free.

Still undecided? If you’re interested in hearing more of Mr. Wishon’s thoughts on this newest innovation

Interesting, but it seems to raise a lot of questions. Doubtless the rule makers will cover this!

How many shafts can you carry in your bag? How many club heads?
How about extendable shafts? What about slow play?

It all seems an added complication!

It seems more and more that the more you can afford to spend the easier the game becomes.
I think that it is time to call time on innovation and get back to hitting it, finding it and hitting it again.

I agree. Why not pay someone else to play for you! Perhaps it's more satisfying for some to caddy and not play at all! They can then pay you!

Let's keep with tradition and boycott the tecnology!

seems like a another case of 'raising the prospect that technology will solve all a golfers woes and thus getting him to spend more money to no avail' . I have enough trouble selecting the right club and quieting the demons in my head already. Why would I want to worry about shaft flexibility over every shot. Get fitted clubs, have lessons, relax, enjoy, accept the outcome, move on.

Surel its easier to position the head of your club for different weather conditions and if you are carrying the extra shafts do they count as extra clubs in your bag.

For all the huge advances in golf technology, off the tee distance, and innovative ball construction, I bet the average handicap of the golfing population of the UK hasn’t changed very much over the last thirty years.

When I joined my first golf club in the late 70s/early 80s, I think the average handicap was 15 or so and I'd be surprised if it has changed at all in the interim. Ther's a HUGE rump of golfers out there whose main golfing aim in life is to break 90 on a par-70 or par-72 course.

And as far as driving distances are concerned, despite thin faces, more forgiving 460cc Titanium clubheads, lightweight & ever-longer graphite shafts and high-tech golf balls, I'll pretty much bet the farm that the avarage amateur golfer hasn't increased his AVERAGE driving distance by more than 5-8 yards since the turn of the century. Either: Many of the the 'youngsters' taking up the sport hit it a long way, (but that's not the same thing, because they are bigger, stronger, fitter & better-coached than I was at their age and they'd hit the ball out of sight with almost anything), but by far the biggest beneficiaries of the new club, shaft & ball technology are the Tour Pros. So why confuse the matter more with interchangeable shafts? ...because that will sell more gear, and make more money for the marketing men - simple. It's the same for all products not just golf. And who can blame them when we go out and buy them!

Just an other money making venture from the manufacturers, that will make no difference to that average player. PS I am sure they will ban these in a few years, which will yet again make more money just as they did with drivrs!

Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at here. There is such a nicey, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of ponzy-like structure, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For several years , I earn money with the help of these programs.
I don't have problems with money now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I get now up to 2G a day , and I started with funny 500 bucks.
Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Visit my blog to get additional info.
